Syrian government troops backed by Russian aviation to develop the offensive on the city of Deir ez-Zor and in the last day progressed eight kilometers, said the defense Ministry. “A group of Syrian troops under the command of General Hassan Suhel operating in the southern province of raqqa over the past day progressed eight kilometers and captured two strategically important heights” — quoted by TASS message of the Ministry.
The defense Ministry said that during the offensive, troops dislodged the terrorists “Islamic state” (organization banned in Russia) from the road Palmyra — Deir ez-Zor and reached the approaches to the village of bir-Cabaces.
In the course of this operation the Russian military planes flew more than 80 sorties, losses of terrorists made up of about 70 people, said the Ministry of defence. “As a result of air strikes destroyed two tanks, three APCS, more than ten cars of the increased passability with mounted heavy weapons. Losses of terrorists made up of more than 70 people killed and wounded”, — said the Agency.

Earlier in August, the chief of the main operations Directorate of the General staff of the Russian armed forces Colonel-General Sergey rudskoy said that the release of the Deir ez-Zor will lead to the defeat of the main forces of the terrorist group “Islamic state”. He then said that Syrian troops, backed by Russian VKS “rapidly” advancing on the city from three directions.
The Minister of defence of Russia Sergey Shoigu called Deir ez-Zor “key point”, the capture of which will mean the defeat of ISIS. “Today, there are key points, such as Deir-ez-Zor, I would say, first and foremost, Deir-ez-Zor. There is resistance for years… It’s such a basic point on the Euphrates, which will be largely, if not all, to talk about the end of the fight against ISIL,” — said Shoigu.
According to the Russian General staff, since the beginning of the Russian operation in Syria, that is, from 30 September 2015, aviation aerospace forces struck nearly 90 thousand hits and made more than 28 thousand sorties. According to the chief of the main operations Directorate of the General staff Sergey Rudskoy, the air force strikes have caused “significant damage” to the infrastructure of the militants in Syria.
According to the head of the defense Ministry, the area under the control of government forces from the territories over the past two months increased 2.5 times.
